Kagiso Pat Mautloa is interested in the factors that characterise the city.
A permanent artist at the Bag Factory Studios in downtown Fordsburg, he explores the relationship of the city environment to the people who inhabit it. In some works he looks at space, and the absence of people within that space.
"It is often the marks that people leave which speak about the people themselves,' says Mautloa. "Conversely, the faces one sees when walking through town reflect the vibe of the city - both its positive and negative aspects."
In all his work, both past and present, Mautloa has been concerned with texturing and layering in relation to his media and to his interaction with his subject matter. This process metaphorically speaks about the passage of time, the movement of people and the many layers - spiritual and physical - that make up the fibre of the city.
Mautloa was born in Ventersdorp in 1952. He was educated at Leratong Primary School and then Morris Isaacson Secondary School in Soweto. He now lives in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
Between 1966 and 1973, he studied art at Leratong Art Centre, Soweto, then Jubilee Art Centre, Johannesburg. He obtained a fine art diploma from ELC Art Centre, Rorke's Drift, Natal, in 1979.
His work is included in several major collections including those of the University of Fort Hare, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, MTN and Sasol.
