After spending one year at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts at the University of Cape Town, Jane changed course and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of KwaZulu Natal. Jane then completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Architecture which enabled her to register as an Architect with the South African Council for Architects.
While working as an architect, Jane began to take on commissions for ceramic and mosaic projects. These were mainly linked to buildings, and a great way to intergrate her interest in art and architecture.
Jane started running a mosaic studio in 1998 which has built up steadily over the years. Very often she undertakes to do commissioned artworks on buildings which are very much part of an established community. Most of these proects call for community participation and so the studio is frequently full of participants from a wide range of backgrounds learning and training in the art of ceramic and mosaic murals. |
"I'm an individual. Nobody shall make me ashamed of who I am!" Bessie Head
IN THE CLASSROOM |
|
In this lesson plan, learners will get a small taste of the power of Bessie Head's writing. They will also be exposed to the great personal suffering she endured, partly as a result of the hurtful ideas about coloured people that were encouraged during apartheid. Head's letters tell us a great deal about the loneliness caused by prejudice. Lesson planYou′ll need the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader to view these lesson plans. Download it here.
